Backups that fail while your Mac is locked
If you use FileVault, Time Machine can't read some protected files while your screen is locked. So a backup that runs while you are away from your Mac can fail, again and again, for days. Time Machine doesn't say why. It only shows "error 80".
- BackupTempo now tells you plainly that the Mac was locked.
- After a failure like this, it waits until you unlock your Mac and tries again a couple of minutes later.
- New option in Settings › General: keep your Mac unlocked while a backup runs, so a long backup can finish after you walk away. It is off by default, and it never unlocks a Mac that is already locked.
- With FileVault on, Backup Health and Settings now mention that some files can only be backed up while your Mac is unlocked.
Fixed
- Backup percentage. The menu could sit at 90% for most of a backup. It now shows the same percentage as System Settings, and the menu bar icon shows it too. Thanks to the user who sent a screenshot.
- Stop. On an "every few hours" schedule, pressing Stop could start the backup again a second later. Stop now waits for the next scheduled backup, and Backup Health lists it as stopped, not failed.
- Skip Next. On the same kind of schedule, a skipped backup could run early anyway. It now stays skipped.
- False "Backup failed" alerts. Clicking Back Up Now twice quickly, or a slow answer from Time Machine, could trigger an alert for a backup that was fine. Both are fixed.
- Failure notifications. If you back up at set times of day, the notification promised a retry in 15 minutes that never came. It now names the next backup that will really run.
- Waking from sleep. A backup missed during sleep now waits a couple of minutes after wake before starting, as intended.
1.0.1 — July 17, 2026
- Fixed a false "backups need attention" warning on schedules with real gaps — like backing up only Monday/Wednesday/Friday — that don't need a backup every single day.
- Quieted the Activity log: routine clock adjustments (from time syncing) no longer show up as noisy entries unless they actually push back your next backup.
- Fixed Settings and Backup Health sometimes opening behind other windows instead of coming to the front when you click them.
1.0.0 — July 10, 2026
First public release.
- Set your own backup schedule: every few hours, at specific times each day, or on specific days of the week.
- Blackout windows — block backups during hours you choose.
- Pause backups for an hour, a few hours, or until tomorrow.
- Automatic holds: backups defer on their own when you're on battery, low on battery, in Low Power Mode, using the camera or mic, sharing your screen, running an app you've flagged, or your Mac's under heavy load.
- Menu bar icon shows backup health at a glance; a details window shows recent backup history and how long backups usually take.
- A heads-up if a backup stalls or hasn't run in a while.
- Signed by the developer, notarized by Apple, and keeps itself up to date.
- Available in English, French (France & Canada), German, Dutch, and Spanish.
